Message from the Chairman

I have tremendous pride in chairing the OFT.

We are committed to continuous improvement and to changing whatever is necessary to ensure that the UK continues to have a world class competition and consumer regime.

We strive to be regarded as an exemplary organisation; exemplary because we are creating a competition and consumer empowerment culture in the UK that visibly benefits the consumer and the economy; exemplary because we are working in ways that release innovative thinking and creative problem-solving and break new ground and ensure we maximise the benefits from the investment of effort by our staff, multiplying the already positive impact that our work has on the daily lives of consumers and businesses; and exemplary in the way the public service attracts and develops talented staff who deliver value for the UK economy.

I look forward to chairing the OFT during the transition to the new consumer credit regime under the Financial Services Authority, the reformed consumer protection regime and the creation of Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).These new institutional arrangements will all build on the existing strengths of the OFT.

Whilst the recent changes announced by BIS and HM Treasury do provide clarity on the structure of the competition, consumer and consumer credit regimes, we recognise that until all the details are settled, there is uncertainty for both our current staff and for individuals such as you who may wish to join us. Whilst this uncertainty could last for some time, it is important to note that the Government has been clear that these changes are about streamlining and improving these regimes, building on the professional expertise of our staff. During this transition phase the work of the OFT does not stop and we continue to recruit high quality, professional staff to ensure we deliver our rich portfolio of work, with maximum impact for consumers and the economy, over the next two years and beyond. This will also enable the new regimes to hit the ground running, with transfers of responsibilities that are as seamless as possible, and will optimise opportunities for staff.

For that reason we continue to look for exemplary individuals to join us to drive the OFT's work forward. Now is still an exciting time to join the OFT. We are an ambitious organisation intent on driving delivery and leading internationally. Bring to us your skills and experience, diversity of views and intellectual curiosity; share your ideas and learning, and develop and broaden your experience, working with others on challenging and stimulating projects that have a significant impact on the lives of consumers and on economic growth. You can make a difference to our work; and you can enhance your career by joining us.
